Later that evening, Sheba sat on her hotel bed, her briefcase open, legal documents from Shawn Jessup scattered around her. The television was turned to a news channel, but the volume down so as not to distract her. She caught the end of a brief news clip, something about some kid selling lemonade on a Chicago street corner. A feel-good story. However, she didn't feel so good, still stunned at what happened on the courthouse steps.
Never, in her entire life had she ever felt so flustered, uncertain, and downright uneasy. What in heaven's name had gotten into her? She had never been a woman who lost rationale and common sense just because she saw a pretty face. Still, that moment on the courthouse steps, pressed close against Judge Solomon Pike's tall, hard, figure had somehow managed to frazzle her brain. She didn't know how to respond or react to it. She should be angry, or at the very least embarrassed, and she was chagrined to find herself neither. She didn't know what she felt....
