This is the second book where we follow our Roman Contubernium during the First century AD.

After the great fire of Rome they are ordered to form part of the honour guard that is to escort a new statue of the Emperor to Caesarea The ship carrying the statue is part of a convoy which is also transporting Vespasian to Judea where he has been charged with putting down the Jewish rebellion and restoring order which has again broken out within that troubled province.

We follow our common soldiers as they tramp the length and breadth of Judea with the legions as Vespasian and his son Titus try to bring the rebels to battle and whilst the Jewish army remains illusive they have to lay seige to countless towns and cites as small numbers of rebels hide behind their walls and have to be winkled out. Meanwhile across the middle sea in Rome civil war breaks out as this period  becomes known as the year of the three emperors and eventually it will embroil our simple contubernia and their general Vespasian.

Again there are no heroes slaying all before them There are no women, except the ones that are paid for, no romance and no political manouvering
