Simon Jackson is a disagreeable old man with an equally cantankerous case of sciatica. He lives by a lake and his golden years are beset by a humdrum existence and subdivision sprawl. His wife Norma tries to make him comfortable but he is resistant. She buys him a cane which he at first ignore then outright rejects. He and the lake have a history, and before dinner he goes out for a walk and Norma's distress at the cane's rejection softens his heart into taking the cane along. It turns out to be a great redemption.
