The south coast of Sicily runs from Gela to Sciacca and is relatively unvisited by tourists, except for Agrigento's splendid temples - one of Sicily's must-sees. Gela has some important historic remains. The coastline also has marvelous beaches, particularly the white cliffs of Eraclea Minoa, north of Agrigento. Sciacca is a real find, with a fishing port and clifftop town, plus a fantastic summer jazz program. You could also venture out to the rugged Pelagie Islands or inland to see Caltabellotta's castles.  Following are some more highlights: The Valley of Temples lit up at night; Listening to Sciacca Jazz in the summer, followed by a gelato and views from Piazza Scandaliato; Eraclea Minoa's Greek city ruins and a swim on the fine beach below; The rocky shores of Lampedusa; Caltabellotta's jagged promontories and castle ruins; Chatting with the friar at Monte San Calogero; Sunset at Adranone; The impressive Selinunte temples with their 80-foot-high high columns. A great new resource. --Travel + Leisure. "The perfect companion for planning." --Rutgers Magazine.  "These useful travel guides are highly recommended." --Library Journal. There aren't many places in the world you can ski and then hit the beach afterwards for a refreshing dip; see Greek, Roman, Etruscan, medieval and Arabic architecture all in the same town; and meet some of the friendliest people in the world. The richness in culture is demonstrated in the theater, cinema and art found everywhere. The coastal towns, the Mafia, the wines and foods, the astonishing history - all are explored in this guidebook. Full color throughout. This is excerpted from our full guide to Sicily as a whole.
