One more strike means freedom…or death.
In a not-too-distant future where the electrical grid is powered by trapped lightning, nepotistic shockbox jockeys keep their money, influence and prestige in the family by guarding their secrets well. Since Christopher Weir is the oldest son of Syracuse’s top jockey, he never expected to find himself living in filth and ruin. Thanks to his father’s excesses, he’s now being extorted by a lowlife scavenger named Thorpe, who’s pieced together an illegal shockbox that needs to be charged.
Catching the final strike will either activate the box or blow Christopher to bits like the previous jockeys who tried to fill it, and he no longer cares which outcome transpires. However, his ennui wears thin when an old friend of Thorpe’s, a fascinating itinerant tinker from Montreal, passes through town. Christopher can see it would be lethal to provoke Thorpe’s jealousy by falling for Michel—but as the son of a shockbox jockey, hasn’t he been training his whole life to flirt with disaster?
