Sherlock Holmes on the Wild Frontier is a rollicking adventure in the old west featuring our heroes, Holmes and Watson. Hired by Sir Eustace Plymouth to find his errant son who has gone to America to make his own fortune, they head to Colorado and soon learn that Cathcart Pettigrew Plymouth does not take after his cantankerous but successful sire. Leaving a trail of destruction behind him make him fairly easy to follow. The task they believe will be a simple one, only they forget to factor in the locals. Their journey is fraught with peril as they encounter stagecoach robbers, gunfighters, cowboys, Indians and a variety of colourful and interesting locals, one of whom is Foster Keehoe. An old trapper who takes Holmes under his wing to teach him sign reading. Holmes proves an apt pupil. Although they are out of their element they soon learn to fit in. Watson finds his medical skills in high demand as they journey through the frontier where professional doctors are few and far between. They spend an hilarious sojourn in Chief Red Feather’s camp, where Watson catches the eye of the chief’s daughter, Plump Beaver. They meet up with Cathcart’s new bride, the doughty, independent and willful Sarah, daughter of the local Sheriff. When Cathcart gets himself kidnapped by renegades, Sarah insists on coming with them on their search. As they can’t shake her, they have to include her, much to Holmes’s disgust. However she proves to be an able companion and to Watson’s delight, the quality of their camp cuisine improves considerably. Going up against the renegades proves to be a somewhat daunting enterprise, so they connive to bring the army to their aid. Lots of humour, action and adventure make this an absolute fun read. Once you start reading it is hard to put it down.
