Introduction

Seals are a big part of several cultures throughout the world. In ancient times in Greece, they were on early coins. The Celts (people who settled in Ireland and Britain) believed that there were creatures called selkies that were like mermaids, except they hid their human sides under a seal skin.

The Inuit people, among other people, have depended on seals for a long time, and some of their legends have seals in them, including the goddess Sedna. She has a half-seal body, appearing rather like a mermaid.

Seals are spread throughout many regions of the world; they have provided humans with food, and kept other species from getting too large in numbers. They are fascinating creatures that split their time between the land and the sea.
