Sarajevo is the city where east meets west given its geographic location as well as being historically shaped by the intermingling of Muslim and Christian influences on European soil. Sarajevo is steeped in significance. It is situated on the dividing line of the eastern and western halves of the Roman Empire. The city’s rich diversity is intriguing, but at its darkest, the seeds of nationalism have reaped a bloody harvest of war, as occurred at the start of the First World War, and again with the Bosnian War.
