"The classroom door opens slowly and a leaf blows in. It is a colored one even though we start school in late August and the trees outside are all green. A girl walks in.

She has the palest skin I have ever seen. Maybe it is transparent. I can see little blue veins. I think, oh, maybe that is because of the light. Her eyes graze mine. Hers are dotted like a leopard's, pale bronze on yellow. Wild."

When her parents buy a new restaurant--Robi's Flying Saucer Drive-In--Saffron Wilson decides to work there part time. She wants to earn some money--and begin to take control of her own life. Next thing Saffron knows, a carnival has set up behind the restaurant, bringing with it a new friend. Clair Villeneuve appears to be 14 years of age but, as Saffron discovers, is actually much, much, much older. And she seems oddly familiar with everything their astronomy teacher shares with their class, including his belief that the universe is full of life.

When Clair is unexpectedly left behind by the carnival, Saffron learns that not only is her friend in danger but someone is trying to prevent her from completing a secret mission here on Earth. Will Saffron come to terms with her responsibility to help Clair? Will she discover the true nature of Clair's mission? And can Saffron actually protect Clair--even though time seems to be running out?
