The story opens with Alyssa Maciel arriving for her first day on the job as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA). The First Deputy ADA advises Alyssa that she must complete a 90 day probationary period. Alyssa is escorted to her office by the Director of the Motions and Appeals Unit and he does not answer any of her questions. In fact, he tells Alyssa that both of her immediate supervisors are out of the office for the day and places her in an office with Jim from the Appeals Unit. Upon learning that Alyssa is in the Motions Unit, Jim promptly announces, I cant help you with anything.
