PROLOGUE

"… I don't want you to ever promise me the moon and the stars and all that unrealistic mumbo jumbo. All I ever want is for you to promise me that you'll come to me; that you'll let me in fully, ok?"

Those words would come back to haunt Brooke.
. . .

"Does 3:00 pm work for you?" Zeke asked as he chopped garlic for the pasta they were preparing.

"Yeah, that's fine," Brooke responded, lost in thought.

Zeke had reached a point in his therapy where her presence as his fiancé was required. Although she knew this time was coming, she was nervous about it. She didn't want anything to destroy the newfound love they reveled in.

These last six months had been perfect; so perfect that she could look at the five years they'd spent apart as a blessing.

She understood now all too well now why Zeke had refused to discuss his past with her all those years ago. Maybe if she'd just left well enough alone, she wouldn't be facing the situation she'd soon find herself in once she walked through his therapist's doors.

Will the secret she's keeping destroy them forever?

Can their love survive yet another breach of trust?

Or will there be no Return for either of them this time?

###

"Baby you're shaking like a leaf. What's wrong?" Zeke asked.

"Just a bad dream, that's all. I'm fine," Brooke said.

"That's the third one this week. What's going on Brooke? I've never known you to have bad dreams like this."

"Honey it's nothing, really. I think I'm just a little stressed with work at all. I'm adding some new material to my YouTube channel and I'm nervous about how subscribers are going to react," she said.

"Go back to sleep. I'm fine. I'm just gonna go get a drink of water."

Kissing him lightly, Brooke slid from the bed and went to the kitchen.

She hated not being completely honest with Zeke. Part of her stress was work-related, but she knew that it had nothing to do with the dreams she was having. Ever since his proposal, she'd been having horrible dreams. There was one in particular that haunted her.

A baby was playing on the edge of a body of water. She yells for the baby to come to her, but it laughs and backs deeper into the pool of water.

She runs, but can't get there fast enough. She keeps reaching for the baby, but he's always just out of reach. And just when it seems like she's about to get ahold of his little hand, she wakes up.

Brooke knew it was her subconscious talking to her. Zeke's proposal had shaken loose the false sense of security that she could keep her secret hidden. It had made it all too real – the fact that they were going to be sharing a life together.

She'd just gotten him back. She couldn't risk losing him, and she feared that her secret would do just that – tear them apart … again. This time forever.
