Aldon Prandtel used to be a successful scientist. Now he is a street-urchin-drug-addict who lives on the broken streets of 22nd century St. Louis, a gigantic but decaying metropolis. Though he doesn't know it, the government of the North American Union - a splinter nation that formed when the United States dissolved - is looking to enlist him in a much-touted research project rumored to have a hidden dark side.
