Getting to Know Acne

What is acne? Acne is a very common skin disorder which induces outbreaks of skin lesions that are caused by the overproduction of an oily substance called sebum which results to the clogging of pores. It can also be caused by the too much exposure to bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes. It typically occurs on the onset of puberty, because during this time there will be a significant increase in the production of sebum and androgen. These lesions/pimples typically occur on the chest, face, back, neck and shoulders. It is one of the most common skin diseases. In fact, it affects 90% of the American youth. Furthermore, 15-20% of these cases range from moderate to severe acne outbreaks. Individuals between 12-24 years of age have a prevalence rate of 85%. Internationally speaking acne affects 650 million people; this is according to a 2010 study. Although this is not really a serious skin disorder, it could result in psychological damages and permanent scarring on the face.

Signs and Symptoms
It is a common misconception of people that acne is only about pimples and zits. In fact, a person who has acne could have any of the following: nodules, blackheads, papules, whiteheads, pustules and cysts.

There are two types of lesions: the noninflammatory lesions (comprised of whiteheads and blackheads) and the inflammatory lesions (papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts). Below is a brief description of the physical appearance of the lesions:
• Whiteheads and blackheads form when the hair follicle openings become clogged because of the overproduction of sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria. When comedones’ plug assumes a black appearance, they are called blackheads. They turn black when they are exposed in the air. When comedones are in the form of closed, slightly raised, brown-colored bumps, they are called whiteheads.
• Pustules (commonly known as pimples) are inflamed and infected plugged oil glands which are sometimes infected with pus at the tips.
• Nodules are very painful lumps in the surface of the skin. They are formed because of the formation and buildup of sebum in the hair follicles.
• Cysts are also very painful boil-like lumps found beneath the surface of the skin. They typically cause scars.

Aside from the physical symptoms, acne can also affect the psychological state of the person who has it.
