Clarisse Hightower sells her half of a psychic investigation agency in Los Angeles and heads to the east coast obeying the summons of a serial killer locked in purgatory. The deceased Belinda McBride’s heartfelt cries beg Clarisse to “save my son.” Clarisse doesn’t know from what or who. However, the psychic images Clarisse receives are dire: two drowned children floating in a river, a sobbing auburn-haired woman, and a stoic-faced sheriff shooting a man. When she first meets Matthew McBride, she sees a downtrodden man working as a mechanic. An ex-convict, he was tricked into abetting a felony by his deceased mother. Once an upwardly mobile suburbanite, Matthew has become the local pariah. Clarisse is aghast to see a psychic golden cord between them. It is proof that they are soul mates: in the past, in the present, and in the future. He rejects his own psychic powers until Clarisse convinces him that a kidnapper is in town seeking to take the only reasons he had to live—his affection for his ex-girlfriend and her two children fathered by the local sheriff. To circumvent a human demon from destroying the small-town of Kingston and the people in it, Matthew is going to have to accept his powers and become the man he was destined to be.
