"Reciprocity" explores how certain ideologies and extremist behaviours can manifest in average and well-meaning people. It is a fascinating story that shows how a person's perception of reality can influence their values and beliefs.

The novel makes an interesting parallel between the spread of Islamic fundamentalism and communism in the latter parts of the twentieth century.

The story then goes on to show how Jack, a convert to Islam, falls into the realm of fundamentalism and terrorist activity. His perception of the world and his role in it is drastically changed in an instant simply by making the target of his violent activity personal. This sudden change in perception is explored well in the story and gives the reader much to think about.

The ending of the novel is particularly poignant and thought-provoking. What message or meaning can the reader take from this ending? The story allows the reader to make their own conclusions about who was right and who was wrong, or if such labels can even be applied.
