Billy Longbow and his brother, JJ, grew up on a ranch, just outside of Lufkin, Texas, that had been in the family since Texas became a state. JJ was an avid hunter while Billy was strongly against killing. They were just boys when they first witnessed the blood-curdling terror that a giant Russian Razorback hog could inflict. While out exploring in the woods along the Angelina River bottoms, they were traumatized when one of their good friends was attacked right in front of them. Years later, drafted to Vietnam, Billy experienced the horror that man could inflict. When he came back to Lufkin, he just wanted to be left alone and declared himself an atheist, “how could God allow such horrible things like that to go on?”… However, there was one girl, Suzanne, that reached out to him and softened his heart. JJ found his true love also when an old cowboy and his daughter showed him what hog hunting was all about using horses and dogs. JJ was smitten by the beautiful cowgirl, Annie. Trying to rid their ranch of the hog population that was causing serious destruction to the ranch, they opened up the ranch to hog hunting. However, terrible things started happening to the community—and more importantly, their family. JJ claimed that the old giant razorback hog they remembered long ago was still out there. JJ and a big Cajun from Zavalla, Texas made a pact together to destroy the giant razorback. Instead, the elusive hog nearly destroys the Longbow family. Billy is forced to make a decision, and falls back on his fighting skills he learned in Vietnam. He goes to battle the hogs in the deep woods of the Angelina River bottoms. Only a miracle can save him from the giant razorback’s destruction.
Truly a story of love and hate, Razorback takes you on a thrilling ride with intensely realistic descriptions. Suspense and action combine to keep your adrenaline pumping. Next time you hear a sound in the woods…you’ll think twice.
“I found it easy to relate to Mr. Wilde’s descriptions of the local flora and fauna, community settings and activities, and ranch life—right down to the chores and Sunday dinners. Throughout the book, Mr. Wilde has masterfully woven in factual information…The giant razorback, Ole Lucifer, certainly spices up the thriller component of the book. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy Razorback for the novel that it is.”---Russell Stevens, wildlife and range specialist with the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation.
