After his father’s funeral, twelve year-old Peter Day spends the summer with his grandparents while his mother starts a new job and looks for their future home in a nearby state. Peter soon learns that one of the neighbors is an angry old man who keeps several beehives. Science being Peter’s favorite subject in school, this knowledge piques his curiosity.

Harvey Yates has been alone for more than forty-five years and prefers it that way. When an intrusive twelve year-old puts his efforts into learning about Harvey’s beehives, he avoids interacting with the boy as long as possible. That changes one night after Harvey can’t sleep and discovers a note from his dead wife that should have been read forty-five years ago.
