This YA (and YA at heart) novel of the magical realism realm, follows plant-savvy Birch while she listens for the song in her heart, and sings justice through a lens of love.

Birch is fed up with schedules and fluorescent lights. She lives for timeless moments in her garden, where she imagines her plants whispering their secrets just out of earshot. Her curiosity is piqued when she witnesses a boy crawl from a puddle that wouldn't cover a toad. Birch and her new friend plunge into a forest adventure, via the reflections upon a puddle and a magic piece of tektite shaped like a leaf. Very active trees populate the world, trees that put on festivals, create sacred space, meditate from their roots to their leaves, all in celebration of life, love, joy, and the great cycle that keeps everything going. Our friends dance all night with the trees, and wake up to tales of the forest told over foraged feasts. Between this revelry and getting bit by an invasive grassy species, they receive a quest invitation from a cat.

Sing the song that is in your heart.

And Listen.
