This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to overcome the fear of speaking in public and how to effectively speak publicly. Compounded in this book are the various ways that anxious speakers can use to ward off fear of public speaking. Also included are approaches that can benefit speakers in enhancing their techniques in verbal communications.

The art of addressing an audience through spoken communication effectively is the definition of public speaking. Delivering speeches have one goal which is to convey a message to the addressee. It is often used to motivate people to perform certain acts, to inform regarding new knowledge, and to persuade towards a view.

In the past, public speaking has been viewed to be formal and stiff and its speakers put on a pedestal. This may be one of the reasons why occurrence of glossophobia is common. From the Greek words glossa and phobos meaning tongue and fear respectively, fear of public speaking is termed as such. Glossophobia is characterized by nausea, excessive sweating, panic, and physical distress when the possibility of speaking in large crowds is brought up or when the person is put in that certain situation. People with this condition tend to avoid circumstances where the need for them to speak up is highly possible.

Currently, speeches have been made more conversational, honest, and inartificial making it easier to carry out. Introduction of speaking in public earlier in school age children is also aiding in their adjustment to it and lessening the fear. Starting early should be the key to creating better public speakers so that when they grow up they will be well-adjusted to an environment of willing listeners.

In contrast, if speakers today have not experienced oral communication early on and are just beginning to make themselves worthy of the task of public speaking then this book will allow them to challenge themselves to face and eradicate their fears. Fear of public speaking should now become a thing of the past and great flawless speeches should become today’s new craze.

Normally when a goal is set, assessing and planning come next. In this chapter all the necessary preparations are discussed and detailed to meet the major objective of conquering glossophobia and winning against it consistently.

The preparations would include:
•    Studying and researching about the topic
•    Creating visual aids, props, and notes
•    Practicing
•    Familiarization
•    Physical preparations

Studying and researching the topic
As you have been assigned the task of delivering the message to an audience it has become your responsibility to know your topic.
