Dr. Paul Miller is a brilliant psychotherapist who has developed a new form of therapy which he calls Cinematherapy®. As part of his patient's therapy he prescribes movies for them to watch that address their therapeutic issues. Dr. Miller suggested that Mr. and Mrs. Thorton to watch the movie Under the Influence to better understand their daughters drug use. It was suggested that Phil watch Steel Magnolias after his wife died. And he had Daniel watch Night Mother, following which Daniel committed suicide. Daniel's parents sue Dr. Miller, stating that it was his unorthodox therapy technique that caused the death of their son. After Dr. Miller is arrested, Rachel Moore appoints herself as his attorney. A trial pursues. It is disclosed that Rachel is Daniel's sister, she is removed from the case and Dr. Miller is left to defend himself. Life changes for everyone involved in the case, especially Dr. Miller who now lives a new life in his Paradise Cafe.
