Emmett Phillippi is an ambitious loser approaching his golden years without financial security or success in any of his undertakings. However, he is still on the lookout for some scheme he can hook his fingers into. A news report about a deformed infant on life support gives him an idea for such a scheme. The parents want the babys life terminated, and Emmett sees opportunity in the parents misfortune. He acts immediately, contacting an acquaintance, Waverly Hampton, a politically ambitious but unknown pro-lifer. Emmett intends to ride to glory on Waverlys coattails. He takes immediate action by having Waverly appointed the infants guardian while serving the parents and the hospital with restraining orders, preventing them from removing the babys life support. He exploits the tragedy for all its worth and succeeds in capturing headlines and pulling Waverly out of obscurity. The human interest story takes on a life of its own, and Waverly is now the white knight. Just as it couldnt possibly get any more intriguing, unexpectedly, events take a deadly turn when the baby is murdered!
