The book is a true story about a cat that was found along the road two days before Thanksgiving with a can stuck on his head. It goes on to tell how Pilgrim was brought home only to meet a rather reserved "Lucy", a Sheltie dog who happens to be the "Princess" of the house. She wants to know who he is and what he is doing at her house. He tells her of his terrible plight of being hungry and cold and how "the Lady" found him .
