Harris County Sheriff's Department detective Pete Scallion is wrestling with the decision of whether or not to return to his job of solving cold case homicides, while mired in the grief of the recent loss of his wife, Marti. Retirement looks like a better alternative, since he has lost the only person who has sustained him through his career. The realization that his work solving nearly forgotten murders is the only life he has left finally wins out, and he reluctantly returns to the department. The case that soon draws Scallion's attention is the eight-year old brutal murders of an elderly couple in the northern reaches of Harris County. A clue discovered during the initial investigation, but disregarded until Scallion now follows it, leads him to the fabled Hill Country of central Texas. The small town of Windcliff at first seems to hold no answers to his search, but he is soon involved in the threatening depths of human depravity.
