One Man’s Opinion is author Charles Story’s conversation with readers, addressing critical issues within African American culture, from careers to education, health, business, religion and family. He challenges all African-Americans to engage in dialogue, but then to move beyond conversation and into action and suggests concrete ideas for next steps.
In his musings, Story questions many of the prevalent trends in African-American culture. He freely discusses the cultural issues affecting black people, from the demise of the “village” structure of our communities to our unhealthy eating habits.
In the opening chapter, Story reflects on a time when the African-American village was in tact. “Those were the days when African-Americans watched out for each other and for each other’s children. Part of the reason why this village mindset was established is because we lived in segregated communities. In our communities, the educators, who worked in our segregated schools, lived in the same neighborhoods as we. The man who cut the grass at the school lived in the very same neighborhood as the principal. Everyone was equally invested in the welfare of the community.”
Acknowledging that times change, the author pointedly questions the values and behaviors that have emerged among black people in this post-Civil Rights Movement era. But more than questioning, his mantra at the close of each chapter is to move into action.
Story writes, “Whether you are a minimum wage employee barely making ends meet or whether you are making a six- or seven-figure income at the top of your profession, you can make a difference. We all have a role to play and a responsibility to our people. The time we are given on this earth to make a difference is short. I do hope that you feel it is worth it to invest some of your time to a cause greater than yourself.”
One Man’s Opinion is a worthy read for every person who has reflected on the state of the African-Americans and questioned what can be done to reverse disturbing trends and posture black people for success.
