In "On the Suwanee River," Opie Read brings together a blustering, posturing land seller; a spoiled debutante who finally gets the man she deserves; a preacher who can't decide whether to preach or pray; a blackmailer; a train-robber gone good; a worried mother; and, a heroine with an uncertain and checkered past.

This edition of the book contains nine original illustrations, rejuvenated, and one additional illustration that is unique to this edition of the book.

Opie Percival Read (b. December 22, 1852, Nashville Tennessee; d. November 2, 1939, Chicago Illinois) was a prolific American journalist and humorist. His bibliography lists 60 published books.

Prior to 1887, Read edited five separate newspapers, all in the U.S. South: the Statesville Argus (KY), the Bowling Green (KY) Pantograph, the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Little Rock (AR) Evening Post, and the Little Rock Gazette, ancestor of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. In 1882, Read founded his own humor magazine, the Arkansas Traveler, which he carried on after leaving newspaper journalism in 1887.

Read brought the Arkansas Traveler, a flowing pen, and a command of Southern dialect to Chicago in 1887. He would spend the remainder of his life in the Northern city.
