A senior man, a retired, single, home construction business owner, has bought a large house and renovated it entirely and put in four apartments. It is his retirement home. He occupies one ground floor apartment and rents the others to various people who become important in his life, becoming his family, especially a little girl left at his door by a single mother who rented an up- stairs apartment. Slowly a warm, loving relationship develops and the man, Bill, really becomes her Poppy, as she calls him, and they set about her education, and the other people in the house slowly become his family as well.
