This story is based on the life of a seventeen-year-old boy who joined the Navy against his parent's wishes. While on furlough he has a car accident that leaves him paralyzed from the chest down. He develops a remarkable spirit with which he leads the remainder of his life. It tells of his emotional and physical trials that he endures while energizing himself to live a normal life outside the hospital setting. He marries his nurse and she encourages him to fulfill his life's dream of traveling. His struggle to live is challenged by many near death episodes. His doctors are mystified by his love of life and his resolve not to die. Richard was given no hope of living beyond five years. This is the story of a man who survived by his will alone, a man determined not to die until he was ready.
