When Detective Inspector Reginald Tombs is assigned to a serial rape investigation, where victims have received peculiar bite wounds to the neck, he doesn't realise his life is to be dramatically changed forever.

Reg, divorced and living alone with his saxophone and his trusty 'stoat' - his pet name for his willie (which seems to have a life of its own), finds himself in the severe, but excitingly beautiful company of newly transferred Detective Sergeant Stephanie Stevens.

True love, and not a little lust is kindled in his loins, and soon the burning issue at the 'Nick' is, - will Reg Tombs make it into Stephanie's regular issue blue serge knickers?

But overshadowing everything is the hunt for the rapist. Reg is aided by DS Clancy - a near seven foot lump of Connemara rock who is holier than the Pope.

Is the 'Vampire', as the rapist is named by the media, just a weirdo on drugs, or something more sinister - to do with a nearby biological research centre?

But the victims are strangely affected - more so than can be explained by just shock.

Modern forensic science and flat footed police work steadily close the net. But the 'Vampire' turns the tables, hunts not only Reg Tombs, but Stephanie Stevens, set up as bait in her flat, waiting like a sacrificial lamb for the beat of the Vampire's wings.
