Christopher is a schoolboy who comes from a poor home. He has no father, and his mother struggles to make ends meet. His school clothes are old and no longer fit him, and the roof of their home is in need of repair.
A farmer gives Christopher a job looking after sheep during the school holidays. He has to cross a river to get to the farm. During a storm one night, Christopher's home is deluged because of the leaks in the roof. His mother is extremely upset and Christopher sets off for work in damp clothes. The river on the way has burst its banks and become almost impossible to cross. Mr Matshumbisa takes charge of the people who want to cross, and they all hold hands to stop the raging current from sweeping anyone away.
Although Christopher is terrified, they reach the other side safely. The farmer is pleased with his work. He pays him on the last day of the holidays, when they deliver sheep to the town. While the farmer attends to other business, Christopher spends his money on a new school uniform and also a surprise for his mother.
