A World War II novel about a teen-aged Nebraska farm boy who travels to Germany for the 1936 Olympics. He enrolls in medical school and, after two years, is drafted into the German army because he refuses to join the Nazi party. He finds himself assigned as a valet to Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. When the Afrika Korps surrenders, our hero is sent to a POW camp 150 miles from his hometown...Upon his return home he finds a surprise waiting for him and soon embarks upon a long journey back to Europe.
This story is based upon true incidents. When World War II broke out, several hundred young Americans studying, touring, or visiting relatives in Germany, Italy, and Japan, were pressed into those respective services against their will. After the war, retrieving their citizenship became somewhat of a nightmare to several of these young people.
