Hugo Lopez’s exploits in Cuba were those of any energetic teenager in and out of scrapes. He attended Catholic schools, fished for croakers and red snappers, and entered rowing contests at the local yacht club, where he wasn’t allowed membership because his family wasn’t wealthy.

Hugo has often suffered racial indignities of the small-minded, but he has also found goodness in the many who helped him on his way.
