"Music From Both Sides of the Moon" introduces the reader to a remarkable ensemble of characters including Nathan O'Shea, a musician from a small town in Mississippi who travels throughout the South. Nathan lands in New Orleans when the leader of the Mississippi All Star Dixieland Band absconds with two weeks of wages and the drummer's wife. Nathan meets E. Tim Kelly, an phenomenal clarinet player who had been bitten on the head by a cottonmouth water moccasin as an infant. E.Tim had been left with one side of his skull caved it by the bite and spent his youth as a member of "Professor Bill Crady's Traveling Show of Oddities and Prodigies". Nathan, E. Tim, along with a one-armed trumpet player named Wingy Mignon form the "Night Bloomin' Jazzmen' and become the most popular musical act in New Orleans. Nathan leaves New Orleans when E. Tim dies of a brain hemorrhage on stage and travels to Los Angeles. When the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, Nathan joins the USO Foxhole Circuit where he and many Hollywood stars perform for the troops. Throughout his visits to war zones all over the world, Nathan searches for a Navy nurse, Joleen Salveson, whom he fallen in love with at first sight at the Hollywood USO Canteen. Joleen Salveson will volunteer for an assignment on Corregidor in the Pacific. Soon after landing, the Japanese will attack the island and hold her prisoner for nearly three years. In a parallel storyline, the Carolina family will be struck by the suicide of their son. The mother will fall to alcoholism and self-abasement which leads to the near death of her husband at the hands of her sadistic lover. Molly Caroline, the daughter, will pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian while living with the everyday guilt of not being able to have prevented her teenage brother's death. Despite the tragedies that have befallen the characters from "Music From Both Sides of the Moon", the reader will find that the remarkable power of love can truly overcome the most horrible of adversities
