Classic whodunit mystery in a fantasy world setting. Wolf Hill joins a merchant caravan to further his yearning to get away from home. A small group of varied travelers get separated from the main group. When isolated in a forest glade one of their number gets brutally killed. Wolf joins forces with an enigmatic, little old gnome to discover the killer in their midst as the body count rises.

Fed up with his family Wolf Hill sets off into the unknown. His plans are vague - his goal is simply to get away. When it's too late to turn back he realises he may be out of his depth. He signs up as a mercenary with a traveling caravan and finds himself in a world of potions sellers, purveyors of exotic wares, pilgrims and bards. When one of them is murdered young Wolf finds himself placed where he may know the killer. Is it his giant, philosopher boss? Or the dirty, loner bookseller? What about the bards, or the cleric? Or that boring woman, burdened with her own secrets? And strangest of all is the little gnome, who sits watching whilst smoking her pipe.
