Here comes Cleo again, driving her Rolls Royce Silver Wraith around the New Forest. And, of course, helping DCI David 'Steaming' Kettle to solve crimes. In this fourth book there is murder and the theft of antique amber.
Lord Bernard Smythe owns Mitcham Manor and a collection of amber artifacts and panels of pictures made up of amber. One of the Manor's cleaning ladies is killed and her husband disappears. An expert tells Lord Bernard that some of his amber is fake. Did an ancestor buy some of the amber panels stolen from the Catherine Palace in Tsarkoe Selo near St. Petersburg (Russia) by the Nazis during World War II? Or are the fakes modern?
Cleo becomes involved because the Smythe family are friends of Cleo's friends, Paula and Gerard Linley.
The Amber Room at Mitcham Manor is well protected so who could have swapped the artifacts? Maybe the cleaning lady, a member of the resident staff or could one of the Smythe siblings have been involved? And did the mysterious new resident in Mitcham Parva have anything to do with it?
Cleo and her friend Primrose Day (a journalist for a national daily) join forces both in Hampshire and in London to help unravel the mysteries.
