Mostly Maxx: Maxx Catches a Fish and Maxx Rides His Bike are stories written for families to share. The adventures Maxx experiences throughout the book are about good, wholesome family values. Through Maxx's eyes children can see that by being kind and thoughtful Maxx always has happy things happen.

The author, Curtis Davis, grew up in rural Indiana. Davis had a great childhood there, surrounded by family that cared for him and taught him those values.

In Maxx Catches a Fish, Maxx learns thoughtfulness and the value of being home. To start, he is helping Grandma in the kitchen. When asked what he wants to do next, Maxx decides he'd like to go fishing. Grandma lets him go on his own for the first time. But there are things Maxx thinks about. Will putting a worm on the hook hurt the worm? What should he do with the fish after he's caught it? Maxx goes to Grandma for answers to his questions and in the end, the fish goes home.

When Maxx Rides His Bike, Maxx has to be patient and listen to directions, even though it's hard to do. Again Maxx is thoughful, helping his dad remove the training wheels and wanting his mother to see him ride his bike for the first time. He does make the mistake of not fully following his father's directions and crashes his bike. But the lesson is learned as he picks himself back up and successfully makes his way down the sidewalk.
