It was Sunday, June 28th, 1778. The Americans were at war with the British.
On that day the American army was beside the Delaware River. They were at a place called Monmouth.
Mary Hays was there too. Her husband William was a soldier.
Most people called Mary "Molly". She was a small woman, but she was strong.
On that day the British soldiers were marching toward them. Before long they came together and began to fight.
It was the middle of summer and it was very hot. The temperature was over 100 degrees. The men were hot and tired.
As they kept fighting, it kept getting hotter. William was helping to load a cannon. Every time they set off the cannon, the roar of the fire made it hotter.
Molly thought she could help the soldiers.

Find out how Molly helps the soldiers, and how she even acted like a soldier herself in this exciting 15-minute book.
