Gryp has found no more Stones of Ezamal despite several lifetimes of searching and the guidance of Vanagandr. When his guardian orders him to climb through the Wolf ranks, his exceptional skill does not go unnoticed. The current Alpha has been watching his progress and is impressed. She takes him in with the intent of shaping him into her heir. But he quickly learns that she is no typical Child and that he is not as alone as he once thought.

He had hoped his newfound power would further his search and his knowledge but it quickly brings him trouble he had not expected. When he is challenged by an insane man and then a strange woman appears with impressive powers, he learns how risky his new situation really is.

To complicate matters, Shinga returns and is still intent on clearing her name. With her arrival, his entire plan appears that it might crumble. As he tries to stay hidden, he learns that the angels, gods, and Thinkers may not be what he first thought. While trying to make sense of the flood of new information, he is also forced to manipulate a brewing war amongst the remaining races. His search quickly becomes a simple fight for survival.
