Memoir is about growing up in the rural South in the fifties. The author shares insights about his life during that time seen from the eyes of a child as interpreted later as an adult. Norlina, North Carolina in the fifties was a wonderful place to grow up. It was entirely possible to know all 900 residents, give or take a few, if one so desired. It was possible to walk from one end of town to the other in forty minutes, less time if you ran or rode your Western Flyer bike. Norlina had everything one needed, if not, that’s what Sears was for. It would take decades for the author to understand his parents, but he eventually did and came to the realization that they did the best they could to raise their children given their circumstances.
The author describes his personal space and how important it was. Friends, sports, fantasy games, playing cowboys, movies, music, and later girls is all part of this chronology of a simpler time growing up in Norlina.
