This Book contains McCracken's Land and two other stories.
When Bill McCracken was murdered his brother Bob came to bury him and find his killer. His sister in law Phoebe didn’t seem to want his help, but he was not leaving until he finished his job. When the word of Bill’s death spread the rustlers and land grabbers headed in, but Bob knew how to handle himself, as well as them.
He kept his US Marshal badge in his pocket out of sight, but he was officially investigating the murder and after two attempts on his life he wondered what they were after. Did it have something to do with his brother’s death?
His one clue took him in search of a buffalo gun…the gun that killed his brother. One belonged to his brother, but could a little woman like his wife Phoebe fire it accurately enough to hit a man from a distance. What reason would she have to want her husband dead?
Another one belonged to Walter Clawson, but there was no motive there either. He was leaning toward Walter Clawson, but the lack of motive clouded the issue. Why would Walter want his brother dead? Phoebe wasn’t much help in answering that question, and she had good reason.
She was raised on a ranch herself and watched as her mother, who bore seven children, age faster than her years. When she died at forty she looked like she was sixty, and moved like she was ninety and Phoebe wanted more than the ranch life had to offer for her.
Phoebe was vulnerable when she fell under the spell of the dashing man who seduced her. She didn’t feel right about leaving Bill and the children, but with Walter she was experiencing things that she had only dreamed of. Bills death was sudden, and as shocking as it was it opened the door for her to lead a new life.
Bob’s sudden appearance put a halt to her plans and now she had to get rid of him to clear the path for her future. His job was not going to be as easy as he thought, and piecing together the puzzle led him to a woman who intrigued and enchanted him. To complicate matters even more she was the sister of his main suspect and was a headstrong as she was beautiful. Her father listened to both sides of the story while his sister fought to stop her feelings for the man who wanted to kill her brother.
