Masten Gregory was not your average race car driver. Slightly built, wearing spectacles that were highly magnified, he looked more like an academic than a racer. Yet he was successful in a various forms of racing from sports cars, to Indy, to Formula One. A native of Kansas, his father owned a life insurance company in Kansas City. The proceeds of this business were sold by Masten's mother, Nancy, and her son inherited them when he was 19. Gregory used this money to buy his first race car, and later when he entered European racing in 1954. Masten drover for Cooper and a number of independent companies during his Formula One career that lasted from 1957-1964. When this became too expensive for him he switched his concentration to sports cars. Masten Gregory competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans on numerous occasions, the 24 Hours of Daytona, Sebring International races in Florida, and sports car events in Nassau, Bahamas. I have researched my e-book using a variety of sources, especially old newspapers and books with considerable information about Masten Gregory's driving career.
