Ira Singh is a beautiful young reporter who interviews a death row inmate at Mallerford, a prison in a contemporary but unconventional setting. Kallerman, a murderer, is initially belligerent, but opens up due to Singh's considerable charms. Singh feels the despair of Kalleman's hopeless situation, and develops an irrational affection for him. She stands in the front row at his execution, which is cancelled at the last moment due to a technicality. He is led off the scaffold, looks around and spots Singh among the numerous witnesses. Singh smiles. He smiles back.
Kallerman's sentence is changed to life, but he reverts to his old thinking and gets into a fight. His punishment will be 12 lashes. Singh comes back to the prison to interview the man who escaped a strangulation death by a few seconds and is shocked to learn that he will be getting lashes. She can't hold back the tears. Kallerman sees Singh tearing up and is astonished that anyone would express such concern for him. Kallerman gets his punishment but recovers even after an excessive application of force. 42 years later, Singh and Kallerman meet when he is given a pass for a two hour supervised city streets visit for good behavior. After his conversation with Singh, Kallerman returns to the prison in a joyful state.
