Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the Transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was a champion of individualism and a critic of the countervailing pressures of society. He was also the mentor of Thoreau.
Considered by many readers as the father of American nature writing, Thoreau characterized himself as "a mystic, a transcendentalist, and a natural philosopher to boot."
