It is a semi-autobiographical novel. The story is set in the author’s hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.

Ruth Anne “Bone” Boatwright is the narrator of the story. The story revolves around the central character and narrator, Bone, beginning with a conflict between Bone and Glen, her mother’s husband.

The mother-child relationships have been thoroughly examined in the novel. It also explores and examines the expectations of gender.
