Julia needs extra qualifications for teaching. She supported her ex-boyfriend when he worked toward his MA and he was then supposed to support her. Julia finds him in bed with someone else. She goes to live with her grandmother and earns money working in hotels. She needs a better-paid job and applies for a job with Likely Prospects, a company organising exclusive holiday tours.
Roark is a university professor and a full-time lecturer. He's divorced and still hurting after his wife cheated on him. He's determined to stay single. He sometimes helps his brother, the owner of Likely Prospects, as tour lecturer. Roark and Keith Ellis, and Claudia are on Julia's interview panel. Claudia's infatuated with Roark. Julia gets the job.
She enjoys being a rep. A lecturer accompanies each tour to inform guests on the tour's special area. Julia's initial tours go well. Claudia is her contact at headquarters. Julia realizes Claudia doesn't like her but Julia is there to save money, not to make friends.
Roark Ellis is lecturer on her next tour to Italy. Claudia comes too (though officially, Claudia's job is at headquarters). Julia guesses she'll end up as factotum. Julia's uncomplicated honesty impresses Roark. Julia finds he's not introverted or unfriendly and she likes him. Claudia is troubled. The tour ends and Julia doesn't expect to see him again.
Julia meets Roark again later. They're scheduled for another tour together. Claudia has lost her job, for arguing with the boss.
Roark and Julia begin to grow closer. He talks about his divorce. She tries to convince him that he'll still find love one day. The tour is almost at an end. Julia has been trying to avoid Roark and goes for a walk with two tour members. When they return to the bus, one of the women has lost a valuable necklace. Julia offers to go back to look for it and Roark decides to go with her. They find the necklace but need to shelter from a fierce storm in a dilapidated building. Being with him in the middle of nowhere heightens her feelings. On their way back, Roark kisses her. He's mad at himself, and Julia is mad at his reaction. She's swimming through a haze of new feelings.
At the end of the tour, the guest offers Julia some money for finding her necklace. This is strictly forbidden but Julia wouldn't have taken it anyway. She was glad to help. She and Roark part and go their separate ways.
One day outside the company, Julia meets Roark with two women. He introduces his sister and Fiona. In the office, she finds there's a letter addressed to her containing money from the same guest again. She meets Claudia, and Claudia sees the money. She tells Julia that Roark's ex-wife has returned and is hoping for reconciliation. Had Julia just seen Roark with his ex-wife?
Next time in the office, Julia is ordered to Keith's office. Someone (Claudia) reported her for accepting money from a guest. He wants an explanation. Julia clarifies what happened and tells him the money has been returned via registered post. She also says she'll be leaving the company when her contract ends. She has enough savings for her post-graduate course.
On her next tour, she has to suddenly return to London when her grandmother is taken to hospital. They need a close relative fast. Roark is waiting at the airport. Her grandmother is still unconscious. Roark takes her to the hospital and then to his flat (it's near the hospital). Next morning, he takes her back the hospital. On the way, they quarrel. Gran recovers. Julia has just one more tour. She now knows she loves Roark.
On her last tour, Roark turns up. He wants them to give their love a chance. His wife did return, but she means nothing to him. Fiona is Keith's wife. His idea of 'never falling in love again' was before he met her. She's someone special and hopes she's his future. They agree to put the past behind them and delight in the prospect of happiness and a love ever after.
