A few centuries from now, in what was once the American Midwest, a number of small, medieval-like countries struggle to survive in the shadow of the mysterious Old Ones. Josiah Daniels, son of the Mazurra Federation’s leader, has long been fascinated by the Old Ones and wants to discover their secrets in the hope of improving life in his country. But instead of exploring ruins, Josiah’s father has made him an observer in the cavalry for what remains of a war with neighboring Sinloo.
When Josiah discovers a dead Old One with a small case of books and a letter mentioning a great underground library in a faraway land called the Shenandoah Mountains, it sets him in motion. He soon leads a small band of explorers up the Great Eastern River and across the mountains in search of new places and the elusive, hidden library. Along the way, Josiah and his crew make new friends, get arrested as spies, and compete in a military contest dreamed up by a prince before being attacked by pirates and getting trapped in a cave where a cult seeks truth by communing with human skulls.
Reminiscent of Gulliver’s Travels and Lewis and Clark’s voyage of discovery, Light of the Ancient Sun follows the fascinating journey of Josiah and his men through a post-apocalyptic world in search of the past and their fight to restore the light of civilization before it succumbs, perhaps forever, to the forces of darkness and cruelty.
