Leukoplakia is a medical disorder that produces white patch on the tongue, in the mouth, or on the inside of the cheek and vulva that occur in response to long-term irritation.
This is a white patch attached to mucosa of the mouth or tongue that cannot be removed by rubbing.
It is normally a diagnosis made by excluding other causes such as thrush.
The leukoplakia should be reserved for idiopathic mouth lesions when tests are unable to detect any cause.
Leukoplakia is frequently misdiagnosed for Vitiligo.
It is however a mucosal disease not a skin disease.
The symptoms of Leukoplakia?
1. Sores developing on the tongue
They may also occur on the insides of the cheek
They also appear on the outer female genitals.
2. The most frequent symptoms of hairy Leukoplakia are fuzzy painless white patches on the side of the tongue.
The earliest patch is non-palpable, faintly translucent and has white discoloration.
Next, localized or diffuse, slightly raised plaques with an irregular outline form.
These plaques are opaque white and may have a fine, granular texture.
In some cases, the plaques go on to thickened, white lesions
A biopsy of the patch will confirm the diagnosis.
At present there is no proof for effective treatment to prevent malignant change or recurrence.
Surgical excision of leukoplakia may be done.
Cryotherapy ablation and carbon dioxide laser ablation can also used.
