My teenage son wanted an afghan that would remind him of being in a forest by a lake. Together we brainstormed ideas for the perfect lap-sized blanket, and now he loves his straight-sided hexagon afghan in shades of blue, green, and brown.

This design is easily adaptable for different colors and different dimensions, and is a great project to do for your favorite kid. Getting him or her involved in color choices makes it fun, and builds some eager anticipation for the finished product.

An older child can even help with the crocheting!

REQUIRED SKILLS

The project is great for beginners! If you can:

make a slip knot
chain
slip stitch
double-crochet

then you can do this. And if you can’t do these things, I’ve included resources that will help you learn.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Boring Office Guy’s blanket is an 11 hexagon by 9 hexagon lap sized afghan

14 hanks Berroco Vintage (or roughly 2800 yards of worsted weight yarn)
G (4mm) hook
scissors
yarn needle

TOPICS COVERED

More than just a simple crochet pattern, this ebook is like a mini-class. Each topic includes step-by-step instructions and photos where appropriate.

You will learn:

The crochet pattern for a rectangular hexagon blanket with straight sides
How to crochet a granny hexagon
How to connect one hexagon to another
How to connect one hexagon to two or more others
How to crochet a half hexagon
How to take the zig-zag edge of a hexagon blanket and straighten it out
How to add a border

Plus:

Links to resources to help you learn more

Fully illustrated.
