The church bell chimed 8 times in the distance and Kara knew it was 8 o’clock in the evening. The air around her so desperately cold that her breath chilled the instant it left her lips. Ice crystals formed on her hair from where the moist breath had enveloped a few strands. Her feet and hands burned from the cold even as she tried to curl them closer to her body. Her shoes a simple pair of canvas running shoe offered little protection to her small feet. Her feet hurt so bad as her body shook.
Her face softly glistens with trails of tears. “Mommy I’m sorry I am late. I know you must be scared. I’m scared too.” She sobbed in the darkness. At all of 9 years old she knew she was going to die there in that office where her mother had once worked. “Daddy” She said in quietly “Please don’t be mad. I didn’t mean to get lost” She said quietly.
She clasped her hands in those yellow work gloves of her father and bowed her head her voice came out in a soft quivering whisper. “Now I lay me down to sleep” She prayed. “I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If die before I wake before I wake I pray the lord my soul to take.” Those were the only words to Jesus that she knew and she prayed them over and over again until she fell asleep there in the cold.
