Alan Stateson originally planned on flying to Michigan to do a story on the Flint water crisis. However, when his plans were changed by his boss, Alan decided to stick around the area and see if he could come up with another story. His wife Annette and their daughter Abby were visiting Annette's mother, helping her out after a knee operation, so Alan had time on his hands. He lands in Trenton, Michigan and soon became intrigued by the locals and a beautiful Park there. Elizabeth Park is situated right along the Detroit River and had several seating areas, in particular, one bench locally called Joey's Bench. Alan decides there might be a story there and sets up interviews at a local ice cream place next to the park. What Alan finds fills his days and his imagination, but also gives him a dilemma.
