The story is in two parts. Part1 is in the times of Jean Lafitte the 'Gentleman Pirate' and the tale is woven around some real characters and actual events, mingled with fictitious characters and events. Part1 tells the story of how Lafitte's fabulous treasure (still not found) came to be hidden on a fictitious group of islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.

Part 2 is set on the same islands in modern times. A revolution takes place to remove a corrupt government which was put in place by a combination of American and Russian Mafias who use the Islands' casinos to launder crooked money. When they start channeling money for terrorist organisations they draw the attention of a U.S. intelligence agency and a rebellion is fomented by the agency on the Island Group. The government feels that they can get international sypathy by isolating some of the holiday makers and having them murdered to blame the atrocity on the rebels. They do not know that among the potential victims are an ex-SAS captain, two retired infantry colonels, and others who have their own particular talents. To escape, the tourists must make their way from the main, northernmost island, through the middle island, to the third, smaller island. This island is on a long lease to an Argentinian millionaire, whose hobby is collecting and flying vintage aircraft. One of his prize possessions is a DC-3 plane in flying condition. If the fugitives can make it to that island, one of their number--who has DC-3 flying experience, can take them out. Their journey is fraught with danger and not all of them make it to the DC-3. A beautiful Russian spy is with them, but she is on their side. They are nearly frustrated in their escape attempt by a traitor in their midst. When they finally reach the plane their troubles are not yet over and theirĀ  flight becomes a hair raising journey with a damaged plane and inclement weather. Near the ending of the book an air crash of a vintage plane leads to the discovery of Lafitte's sought after treasure.
